Tale Heydarov - The people the world forgotThe earliest wave of Azerbaijani refugees fled Armenia in 1988. Then ethnic cleansing started in Nagorno-Karabakh around 1992. People fled bordering regions mostly in 1993 and cease-fire was signed in May 1994. Currently 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory is under military occupation by Armenians. As an estimated 1 million Azerbaijanis have been driven from their homes as a result of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
